Patrick & Jillian – Oklahoma Wedding Photography

One month ago was a perfect fall day at the Garden Center in Tulsa. Leaves were just beginning to turn, setting a gorgeous backdrop to Patrick and Jillian’s wedding. So, in honor of their 1-month anniversary, here is just a small glimpse at beautiful day.

Baby Katelyn – Oklahoma City Newborn Photography

I was so excited Mandy and Nate let me take pictures of Katelyn just a few days after she was born! It’s been amazing to see how much she’s grown in just the month she’s been here. AND, it was extremely cool to take Katelyn’s pics after having taken her older sister’s newborn pics just a couple years ago! I feel like I’m really drawn to black and white pics of newborns, so this little peek at Baby K’s pics are all in b&w. Enjoy the cuteness!

Callie and Stuart – Tulsa Wedding Photography

Callie and Stuart’s wedding was one of the prettiest and most fun weddings I’ve been part of…and I’m not just saying that because Callie’s my cousin! It was a perfect day, and Callie was a stunning bride! The ceremony and reception were at the Harwelden Mansion in Tulsa, and Mom and Me Events made the day smooth sailing! I’m so excited for Callie and Stu, and I hope for all the very best for them!

Baby Announcement – Oklahoma City Photography

Sara and Richard wanted to creatively announce their upcoming family addition! They both love running, so they chose running shoes as the theme for the session. And…they brought “big brother” Max to help!

Preview Time! – Tulsa Engagement Photography

When Jillian told me she and Patrick were getting married in October,  I immediately started dreaming about scarves and boots and pumpkin spice lattes! Needless to say, I was pretty pumped even before I met them tonight! However, meeting them made me even more excited, and I can’t wait for their special day!

Does My Photographer Want to See My Pinterest Board?

Speaking only for myself (and not for all photographers), I LOVE to see your Pinterest board before a session. If you’ve put enough energy into thinking about your session to make a Pinterest board, I want to honor the vision you’ve created. While the specific location and conditions of your session may not allow for exact replicas, I love to know your style so that I can help you get the pictures you want. I also love it when you come with ideas! Photographers are generally creative people, but having a few extra ideas to work from is never a bad thing.

Pinterest has recently made it really easy to share pins. Just hover over the pin until the little “send” box pops up. Then you can choose someone to send it to, either through Pinterest or by e-mail. I couldn’t find a way to share a whole board, but once you get the pin, you can see what board it’s pinned to.

How Do I Talk My Husband/Fiance/Boyfriend into Taking Pictures?

Most guys won’t fight you when you start plotting for wedding photography. It goes into the “I love you so I’ll wear the suit and a pink flower” category. However, “I love you so I’ll take Christmas and anniversary pictures with you every year” doesn’t usually come across the love radar. You can only ask so much of a guy, right?!?

For Luke, taking photos together is probably equivalent to helping me pick out nail polish or discussing the intricacies of the last episode of Gilmore Girls I watched. He’ll do it for me because he’s the best husband ever (you’re reading this, right?) but he doesn’t spontaneously place the same value on the situation as I do. Therefore, I have to help him see why photos are so important and valuable!

DO:

  • Remind him you’ll be in the picture, too. He likes to look at pictures of you, right?
  • On that note, promise to ask the photographer to take a couple of shots of you by yourself…so he can have a great photo for his desk or phone background.
  • Remind him couples photos usually involve kissing. He likes kissing you, right?
  • Strike a deal. If he’ll take pictures with you, you’ll give him control of the remote for an equivalent amount of time. Or whatever motivation works for him.
  • Let him know that candid styles of photography actually allow a couple to have a really good time together during the photo shoot. It’s not the stiff, formal stuff you find in those yellowing pics of your parents.

And then, a few DON’Ts:

  • Don’t bring out old pictures of your parents, citing the “Awwwws” you’re sure to receive in 30 years when your kids see your pictures. When he looks at those old pictures, all he’s seeing is bell bottoms and how his dad used to have that creepy/rockin’ mustache (depending on his current views of the ‘stache trend).
  • Don’t tell him he will “get” to go shoe shopping if he agrees to take pictures. Trust me, that is not usually a selling point.
  • Don’t trick him. “Hey sweetie, let’s go, um, ‘watch a movie’ tonight…yeah, a movie, right at 7:00. You should dress up!” This will not end well.
  • Don’t manipulate. Turning it into an actual fight could definitely create stress around family pictures for years to come. If all else fails, get some pictures taken of yourself, and photoshop him in! It’ll be lovely on the Christmas cards.

A typical couples session with me lasts about an hour (maybe a little more if everybody’s having fun, but you don’t have to tell him that just yet) and involves lots of fun little assignments for both members of the couple. Things like “Walk over there and kiss her like you mean it!” or “Pick her up and swing her around in a circle” are common tasks.

This pic is Emily and her husband Brian. I call Emily “the world’s leading expert on getting her husband to take pictures with her.” Her method? Remember that life is short, and anniversary pictures can help preserve the great memories! Check out more of their 3-year anniversary session here, and check out Emily’s blog here!

Now, let’s see if I can put my own tips into practice! It’s about time for some 5-year-anniversary pics of Mr. Buller and me!

Why Take Engagement Photos?

Luke and I didn’t take engagement photos, and I regret it all the time. We chose not to because…

a. They didn’t come in our photographer’s wedding package, and

b. We spent our entire (tiny) photography budget on the wedding package.

The only picture we have of our engagement season is the one we took for the church directory. Yep, that’s the one. That’s the stuff Awkward Family Photos is made of.

What I miss about those pictures isn’t so much the reminiscing about how we looked then (Oh, my hair was shorter, you had different glasses, what was I thinking with that shirt?). It’s about seeing how we looked at each other then.

That memory, in digital form, is what I want for my clients, and that’s why engagement photos are included in my wedding packages.

On the days marriage is hard–and some days it can be–I want them to have pictures of the time they were so thrilled to plan their lives together. The times they hated going home at night. The times they planned every last second to maximize time together.

DSC_0185_edited-1

I think the photo session itself should be a good memory and that the photos should remind couples of the happiness, joy, and worth-it-ness of every day they spend together.

So if you’re debating engagement photos…or couples photos…or anniversary photos, take it from someone who ended up on the wrong side of that decision and is now (very politely) screaming…DO IT!! 🙂

New Adventures for JBP!

Welcome to Julianna Buller Photography, or welcome back if you’ve been here before! Things have changed a little, and I want to tell you about what’s happening.

For the last three years, Luke, my husband and photography encourager, has been commuting an hour to work. We figured it up one time, and he’s spent 5% of his life on the road to and from work these past few years.  After much prayer and consideration, we decided our quality of life together would be better if we moved closer to his job. That meant making the difficult decision of ending my experience as a counselor at Stillwater Junior High, a place that will always have a piece of my heart. As hard as the transition is, though, I am in an incredibly blessed place.

This move allows me the opportunity to put more of myself into my photography and writing, two passions that have been forced into hobby-time interests with a full-time job. Now that I have time, I’ve dived into learning everything I can about photography. I’ve updated my photography website, blog, and Facebook page, and I have lots of ideas for letting the world know I’m ready to take its pictures!

Moving into more full-time photography means I get to spend more time letting the creative parts of my brain go to work. It also means I’m more available at the times clients need photos taken. I’m available during the week and on weekends for portraits. I’m especially in love with photographing weddings and couples! Just a reminder, my website is http://www.juliannabullerphotography.com, and http://www.facebook.com/juliannabullerphotography is a great way to connect via Facebook (because who doesn’t check FB 600 times a day?!).

Thanks so much for stopping by! I’m grateful for your interest, support, and referrals! Let me know when it’s time for senior pictures, updated family photos, super-secret pregnancy announcement, or wedding photography. And if you’ve had a good experience with me as your photographer, please tell your friends!

While you’re here, check out Luke’s awesome new videography website, http://bullermediaproductions.com. He is available for weddings and other special events, and wedding photography and video can now be booked together!

Have a great one!!

P.S. The new logo design credit goes to a little Etsy shop called System Design.
